Medical Care
The standard of medical care in Cyprus is very high with all of the hospitals and clinics being equipped with the latest facilities. The staff are well qualified, with many trained at UK hospitals and English is widely spoken.
All of the government general hospitals have A&E departments as do many of the private clinics. Both out and in patient treatment is charged for, holiday makers can also make use of their health insurance.
As with the UK almost all brands of medicines are available over the counter at the pharmacies. The local papers also carry information on the pharmacies that are open out of hours.
As Cyprus is now in the EU health care is provided for people from European Member States. Services are provided on the same basis as to a Cypriot national and EU citizens can use any of the Government Medical Institutions in Cyprus.
If you decide to live or retire in Cyprus you will need to register at a Local State hospital and provide your EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) and other documentation as required in order to apply for a Cyprus Medical Card which will entitle you to government health care.
As private healthcare is so inexpensive in Cyprus many people use it as an alternative to the state services.
The emergency number for an ambulance in Cyprus is 112.
